Interesting iphone app that translates text as it sees it… But if you know some Spanish, you’ll realize that we, translators, are safe….

This is, as far as I know, the only play that has been written about the exciting world of project management. Maybe only localization managers will find this one funny, but I really liked it and I wanted to share it with you all, whoever you are. Besides, it was written by my good friend Dustiño Brumley. Awesome Machine Translation Detector!!

I am sure we all have faced this scenario, we got a translation back that sounds kind of weird, there is something strange about it, we are almost sure that has been done by a machine (which doesn’t have to be a bad thing that was what we asked for), but we can’t prove it. Well, this a tool to detect machine translations, it is really fun to use, enjoy!!

Fluency translator tool

Thanks to some of my friends at the Monterey Institute I discovered a new CAT tool that seems to be really interesting, it reminds me to Lingotek but this one has some really interesting features and a nice and intuitive User Interface. The tool is called Fluency, it has been developed by Western Standard and you can download a free trial and watch a demo here.

Interesting video on how difficult communication between the locals and the American troops is due to the lack of reliable interpreters: “The translators have become empowered and inject their own interpretation into everything. Although the elder clearly indicates he wants to cooperate, the translator fails to convey his answers, And so it goes on.”

Great article on literary writing and translation by Michael Cunningham. I am going to quote something I found really interesting: “I encourage the translators of my books to take as much license as they feel that they need. This is not quite the heroic gesture it might seem, because I’ve learned, from working with translators over the years, that the original novel is, in a way, a translation itself. It is not, of course, translated into another language but it is a translation from the images in the author’s mind to that which he is able to put down on paper.” Definitely worth reading.
